Goodhart's law states when a metric becomes a target, it ceases to be a good metric.

This describes the phenomenon of companies creating leaderboards of AI token usage leading to tech workers racking up thousands of dollars in monthly spend on AI services to compete.

This is a temporary phenomenon that won’t last long. It’s like having a leaderboard of customers called for sales people. It might have been correlated with business value but is useless as a target.

Just because AI makes it super easy to deepfake a person doesn’t mean you can just include that deepfake into your product without permission.

I’m glad I’m not on X because the debate that is being waged there about Anthropic versus the Pentagon is appalling. The post below, like others on X argues that national security should override Anthropic not wanting their AI being used to kill people.

This ignores the incredibly obvious point that LLMs are not reliable enough to make life or death decisions. They aren’t even reliable enough to summarize a blog post consistently. 🤦🏾‍♂️

When it comes to the impact of AI on jobs and the economy, I’m reminded that people overestimate what will happen in a year and underestimate what will happen in ten years.

The stock market similarly overreacted and then underreacted to the internet. Tech was overvalued in the late 1990s then crashed in the early 2000s, undervalued through to the early 2010s and now we have multiple trillion dollar tech companies in the 2020s.

The bet on the internet was right but the timeframe was wrong.

Red Robin decided to fire bussers to save costs and tables stopped getting cleared, wait times ballooned and dine-in traffic declined. Stock down -88% since 2021. Chilis decided to invest in customer experience in 2022 and just saw same store sales grow +31% year over year.

I think two things are true.

1. There are real productivity gains from using AI and jobs being lost as less hiring is done due to usage of AI tools.

2. However the vast majority of the past year of layoffs are due to economic conditions and anticipation of AI productivity gains not actual cost savings from AI.

Ramp’s data science team has published research showing businesses are replacing freelancers with AI. Two key findings

1. Spend on services like Upwork & Fiverr has dropped -80% as companies have shifted to spending on OpenAI & Anthropic’s tools. More than half of the businesses using freelancers in 2022 have stopped entirely.

2. AI is much cheaper. Each $1 of freelance spend is replaced by $0.03 of AI spend.

A genuine question I have is that as white collar work evolves over the next few years to telling an LLM to do your job and catching the 1%/5%/10%/etc where it hallucinates nonsense, how do you hire and train entry level people to do this?

I would love to figure out how to pitch companies to try.

A student decided not to work at a newspaper because of their use of AI and they just wrote up their processes.

Journalists no longer write articles. They research stories and interview people then their notes are turned into an article by AI which they review before publishing. They claim it’s saved them an entire workday per employee.

Note: This is how people are expected to work in Big Tech. This would be celebrated in FAANG.

Apple sitting out the AI race has given its stock price an essential feature; stability.

Tech stocks are experiencing wild swings as investors can’t decide if AI will kill SAAS businesses or big tech is overspending on AI.

Meanwhile Apple isn’t in any of these conversations as they’ve just focused on selling phones.

A CEPR study of 12,000 companies shows a 4% average AI productivity gain, but businesses under 50 employees saw negative impacts.

This matches my impression from work where getting the most from tools like Claude Code requires heavy data and software infrastructure that favors large companies.

A study of 12,000 European businesses shows that AI adoption has increased productivity by 4% without reducing employment in the EU.

Results also show that medium and large companies are seeing more productivity gains from AI than small ones. In effect, the rich are getting richer.

The U.S. government plans to create a website to host content that is banned in the EU so that European internet users can still view it.

For example, Germany bans Nazi content but now the U.S. government in the name of "free speech" will host that content so Germans can view it online despite it being banned in their country.

I’m more curious about what percent of their code is reviewed by humans since that is the systemic risk.

While Claude Code is impressive tech, I’ve seen it make incredible mistakes almost every other day on basic tasks. I can’t imagine the bugs lurking if you trust it completely.

Apple plans to launch smart glasses (similar to Meta RayBans), a pendant (similar to the Humane AI Pin) and AirPods with AI capabilities (similar to Galaxy Buds3). All powered by Siri infused with Google's Gemini.

Apple has historically leapfrogged competitors by making high tech products more palatable to consumers but this time it just feels like they're catching up from behind.
